Walkin’ to Uncle Henry’s apartment, my mind plays Tetris, and I see a clear picture again: Eddie’s in the Gray House.

He didn’t come to school yesterday. After dismissal I went to his apartment, and his mom wasn’t worried cuz they’d just argued and Ed threatened to run away to his dad’s house. His moms and pops are separated. She figured that’s where he was.

But my Miles Morales spidey-sense said dude’s not with his pops in Park Slope.

Yeah, his mom didn’t react to him vanishin’, just like how ancient Greeks didn’t react to their missing cases.

Soon, I’m a block from someone who won’t think I’m buggin’. Someone who believes in monsters. Someone who described the Gray House’s inside as all mazes.

As I walk to Uncle Henry’s stoop, one guy says, “Corey, where’s your mini-me?” He means Eddie.

I ignore him and try walkin’ through him and his homeboys. One steps in front of me, blockin’ my way. I try steppin’ around him, but he blocks that way too. He snarls, makin’ fun that I’m into sci-fi by saying, “Can’t you teleport? Zap yourself into the building?”

His friends chuckle and smirk.

He steps aside. “Go in. Guess your superpower is to be weird.”

I go in and up to the second floor and knock on Uncle Henry’s door and shout, “It’s Corey,” so he knows to answer.
